In the United States alone, an estimated 700 million cell phones have been retired, meaning they are unused in someone’s home or in the trash. Most of those phones end up in a kitchen drawer collecting dust, causing literally billions of dollars to go to waste.

Papa John’s and Cellular Recycler have developed a way to make the most of used cell phones. Now you can drop off your used cell phones at any Papa John’s Location or hand them to the delivery person next time you order a pizza. You’ll be supporting the troops overseas, helping hospitalized children and helping the environment by keeping phones out of our nation's landfills.

Does turning in my used cell phones really make a difference?

Absolutely! Every phone you’re able to turn in equals a donation.  Collected phones from Colorado will benefit the USO, and collected phones from Minnesota will benefit the Children’s Hospital.  Ask your friends, family, and neighbors and you’ll be doing them a favor by clearing out an old electronic item they’ve probably been waiting to get rid of.

What happens to the phones?

Collected phones are either recycled in the United States for their precious metals according to EPA standards or are refurbished for re-use all over the world. During the refurbishing process, the memory of each cell phone is ‘flashed’ to wipe out any previous information stored on the phone and allow for reprogramming.

Are cell phones dangerous when thrown in the garbage?

Yes. Cell phones contain harmful materials like lead and cadmium that are released as phones break down in landfills. These materials can cause cancer and a range of reproductive and developmental disorders even when the materials are released in small quantities, such as leaching into our soil and drinking water from phones buried in landfills.

How does my old cell phone help the Troops?

Each phone collected in Colorado equals a donation to the USO from $0.25 to $35 depending on make and model.  The USO is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the troops by providing morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform.

How does my old cell phone help the Children's Hospital?

Each phone collected in Minnesota equals a donation to the Children’s Hospital from $0.25 to $35 depending on make and model.

Can I turn in other cellular parts, like chargers and batteries?

Yes! While batteries and chargers don’t carry a value like the phones, Cellular Recycler will ensure that they are properly reused if at all possible, or recycled according to EPA standards.
